 Profile America -- Halloween

Listen To This Story In RealAudio - Thursday, October 31st. Watch out - today is Halloween. Originally all Hallows Eve - the night before All Saints Day - the observance dates from the sixth or seventh century. According to Scottish traditions, it's also when ghosts, witches and other unsavory visitors walk the earth for a day. Most of the spooks knocking on your door will be children making the rounds for "trick or treat." Across the nation, that's a potential of just over 41-million costumed youngsters aged 5 to 14. They'll be hoping to collect just a fraction of the candy made in the U.S. each year - 13-billion dollars of chocolate goodies and nearly 6-billion of other confections.  Profile America -- War of the Worlds

Listen To This Story In RealAudio - Wednesday, October 30th. It may sound like only a legend, but it really happened. Sixty-four years ago tonight, many Americans in Eastern cities panicked as their radios told them that Martians had landed and were attacking earth. The event was an adaptation of the H. G. Wells novel, The War of the Worlds, by Orson Welles and his Mercury Theater Group - using fictitious news bulletins to achieve realism. The idea was announced at the start of the program, but many of those tuning in late became hysterical, fleeing big cities and causing massive traffic jams. When the broadcast was made in 1938, about 8-out-of-10 U.S. homes had radios, and there were 743 radio stations. Now, the average home has about six radios, and there are 10,500 radio stations.  Profile America -- Internet Invented

Listen To This Story In RealAudio - Tuesday, October 29th. One of the most important technical developments in history is celebrating its 33rd birthday today. It was on this day in 1969 that the first connection was made on what would become the Internet. The first two computers linked were at the University of California at Los Angeles and the Stanford Research Institute, the beginning of a Defense Department project called ARPANET. In a year, 10 sites were connected; and in 1972, the now universal "at" symbol was selected to facilitate e-mail. Now, more than 4-out-of-10 U.S. homes have Internet access, ranging from a high of 56 percent in New Hampshire to 26 percent in Mississippi and Arkansas. (Source: U.S. Census Bureau)
