Anyway, she said you better accept this.
Accept what has happened. If you don't
it's no good, it could kill you. So, she
touched my shoulder and the pain was
gone, just instantly. I don't know what
the chemistry is - or what the turnabout
was, before we can understand
a thing like this...

Opportunity Program.

According to information distributed by the Metlakatla Indian Community's Employment & Training Program, Master Carver Stan Marsden carved the "Healing Heart Totem Pole" in memory of his son Jim who died of a cocaine overdose. Marsden dedicated this totem pole to the youth of Alaska in hopes that they would lead a drug and alcohol free lifestyle.

The "Healing Heart Totem Pole" located in Craig, Alaska, is a symbol of healing for drug and alcohol abuse and for other means of healing Alaska Natives' needs.

Description of the "Healing Heart Totem Pole"

  • The Bear: Main clan in the Tsimshian Tribes. The bear embraces the youth, protective of its young.
  • The Frog: Represents Jim Marsden (Stan Marsden's son). Jim's mother (Meri Marsden) was adopted into the Haida Frog Clan. Taking the mothers crest, makes Jim of the Frog Clan.
  • The Uninvited Guest: The uninvited guest brings a basket of roses and a blessing. The rose is a symbol of love, peace, and beauty. This represents the spirit of forgiveness and understanding. The uninvited guest was asked to stay.
  • The Raven: The Raven represents Stan Marsden's father Steven Marsden of Metlakatla, Alaska. The Raven steals the sun and gives light and hope.
  • The Killer Whale: The Killer Whale, intelligent ruler of the sea is dancing on its tail. Stan's mother (Louisa Marsden) is of the Killer Whale clan, which makes Stan a Killer Whale.
