"Frank R. Hayward Sr. Elders & Youth Conference" Announced

The Metlakatla Employment & Training - Youth Opportunity Program is sponsoring the "Frank R. Hayward Sr. Elders & Youth Conference" which will be held in Metlakatla on August 5th & 6th, 2002.

Communities' Elders and youth will meet to talk about the concerns they have for their local communities and develop resolutions which will then be taken to the Alaska Federation of Natives (AFN) Elders & Youth Conference which will be held in Anchorage in October. Resolutions will also be presented to the tribal officials at their AFN conference.

"Frank R. Hayward Sr. Elders & Youth Conference" Features & Activities:

  • Cultural dance groups will perform
  • Key note Speaker " Stan Marsden" Master Carver
  • Culture
  • Drug and alcohol free lifestyles
  • A fun day for all youth involved in the conference
  • Elders
  • Healers
  • Educators
  • Traditional Activities

Communities interested in participating are asked to encourage at least 5 youth and Elders to attend the "Frank R. Hayward Sr. Elders and Youth Conference".

Participating individuals will need to pay their own travel expenses and there is a $20 registration fee for each participant who attends. The registration fee will be used for conference expenses.

Housing and at least one meal per day will be provided.

Following the conference participants are also invited to stay for Metlakatla's Founders Day Celebration which will be held on August 7, 2002. This Founder's Day Celebration marks the 115th year of the founding of Metlakatla. A parade, food booths, field events, fireworks & lots of fun for everyone are among the activities planned.
