Restructuring Concerns & Comments
Comments 1-42

I have no elementary kids - feel not enough planning has been done for this year as well as a hidden agenda - one reading curriculum for all - no individual differences valued.

My oldest child will be at Schoenbar. My other child will be in 4th grade this will not affect separate elementary's for me. But it will affect all our families. This is not a good idea.

Restructuring will not work if parents are not in favor of it. My "feel" of the community is at this point they are not!

I think there are far more productive ways we can direct our energy and resources in the next several years. Thank you.

Too many transitions!!! Too much homogenization of children!!! Too much emphasis on standardize test scores!!! Too much bussing!!! Yes to community schools!!! Do not reconfigure schools by moving students!

I am very concerned about the effect of transition.

I have seen/heard no tangible pros of doing this tumultuous change. The laborious, costly, stressful, tumultuous chaos of this unknown "restructuring" I consider "fixing" something that is not broken. I would like to see improvement made in 3 R scores with out moving kids to leveled buildings for social/library, logistics/+instructional concerns.

This is a crazy premise - some people have kids in elementary, jr. high and high school.

My kids are already in 2 schools, but I don't want my children to have to change schools anymore than needed.

School board needs to Listen to community. Not just go forth thinking they have all the answers!! You can re-vote and re-consider!!

Less parental involvement, less volunteering, busing, which my kids do not do now because we go to our neighborhood school.

Have not been given a good enough educational reason to (restructure).

It depends on what this means - I do not support a K-2 and a separate school for 3-6. It already has (negatively effected my family) My 4th grader was made to transfer to Valley Park from Houghtaling, but my 1st grader wasn't allowed to transfer at our request. So our sons were separated. Our boys can meet back at their neighborhood school to walk home together 49 minutes after the 1st grader is out (at 3:25) and 30 minutes (the bus ride from Valley Park to Houghtaling) after the 4th grader is out at (3:35). I don't think it's good for families to have their elementary age children separated. It is more difficult to get elementary age kids to two different schools, to help in classrooms in two different schools, attend PTA meetings at two different meetings, and so on.

I will be having 2 children in elementary schools at the same time. They are 5 years apart and having the older one help the younger would be highly advantageous. Dealing with separate schools will be more time consuming for parents in trying to deal with the concerns of their children - different principals, different curriculums, different time schedules, conflicting programs, etc. Are we supposed to spend more time or less with our children? The restructuring isn't answering anything that doesn't seem to be possible to accomplish with the structure that's already in place. I was not convinced by what was said tonight.

Volunteering in classroom, picking up and dropping off children, transitions would be difficult on our children.

Not being able to give 100% support to all our kids.

Family time lessened.

Parental involvement and transitions.

I value the fact that my 2 elementary age children are maintaining a connection now and will through at least the elementary years.

I live 1/2 hour drive from town. I end up picking my children up a lot after school. A lot of time I have to call the school I hope to pick the kids up before they get on the bus. It's very inconvenient to run to several schools with limited parking to pick up kids. Plus my younger children need the older ones for accountability and to watch out for them. At the present I have 3 elementary children plus one more in the future. I love being involved in the school, but if they are too spread out it's too hard for me to divide myself between all the schools.

The school board has not, does not, and will not listen to public input.

Upheaval of family life. The board/superintendent has not thought this through at all! It benefits no one - just messes up everyone's lives! A student who can't read, will not be able to read no matter what school he's at! So leave him be!

Educational involvement, volunteering, school support and transportation.

The process has flaws, the same old process and the same old results. The community (families) don't support it. Start with a better process.

Don't have time to attend all the activities now without cutting into family time. I can't imagine having to double that. I also feel family atmosphere, bond with school is important to my particular children and an important personal family value. That is not as possible with reconfiguring - other kids who are troubled could feel less connected, have more delinquency problems -more poroblems for my child's class.

Logistics of family - i.e.: transportation to activities, PTA involvement, volunteering. Piling all kids of same academic level in the same class! Not good for the lower-end kids - certainly not good for that poor teacher who gets stuck with that class - which ususally comes with behavior problems too! Special school programs would be dissolved i.e.: PTA sponsored art program. Environment - my kids are comfortable knowing most of the teachers already, as well as office staff - restructuring would ruin that! Cross grade tutoring would be defunct!

My main concern with restructuring is there is NO evidence that states students will benefit from a restructured i.e.: divided elementary school system. If it isn't broken - don't fix it.

At the moment we are close enough to spit on Houghtaling - within 15 months we are moving - the hope was to move to the New White Cliff! Point Higgins looks great at the moment!

Transportation and not having our children in the same facility.

Not enough time to help two or more schools.

Helping out in classroom, PTA, etc.

Also, I am a teacher/parent. I will resign rather than be forced to teach direct instruction in a restructured school!

Three children in three different schools split family - emotional distress on family and children.

I like the family feeling.

Single parent with three kids in three different schools is very difficult. I do not see this as a benefit to learning. High cost of bussing students. Disruption of schools, students and staff. These are just a few.

Skill grouping K-2. Three children in three different schools and problems involved - hear public comment.

There are many.

The breakdown of a school as a living community for a child to grow and develop in a secure, safe environment from grades K-6.

I work and my husband works. I spend a tremendous amount of time volunteering in the school. There is NO WAY I can give what I do with my kids split to separate schools.

No advantages of clear definition of goals/objectives - no process.

Financial, time visiting school, time for interaction with children.

PTA participation for parents, reading pals, mentoring younger children, my children's bonding with their school community.
