OPED

A Time To Honor Those Who Have Served
by Senator Ted Stevens

November 11, 2002
Monday

Since 1954 our nation has set aside Veterans' Day as a time to honor the commitment and dedication of the thousands of Americans who have served in our armed forces. Today, we once again pay tribute to the men and women who have sacrificed so much to defend our freedom.

We also honor the heroes in our midst, the men and women currently serving in our nation's military. The threat of international terrorism and the crisis in Iraq present the most serious threats that we have faced since World War II. If we are called upon to defend freedom and liberty, it will be our young men and women in the Armed Forces who will write a new history of courage. For that, we thank them.

It has been said that "the bravest are surely those who have the clearest vision of what is before them, glory and danger alike, and yet notwithstanding go out to meet it." Today we remember our nation's heroes who have looked out into the world, seen danger, and rushed out to meet it in the hopes of preserving something greater than themselves. And we honor those who will do so again.
