Statement:

I am Phoebe Newman, an 8-1/2 year resident of Ketchikan and candidate for the one-year seat on City Council. I have no previous political experience, but have been actively involved in community service for many years as a founding member and current President of First City Council on Cancer. I am also a volunteer for and member of the Board of Directors of the Ketchikan Area Arts & Humanities Council.

I am running for this position because I am convinced that this is what I am supposed to do next!

I believe I can represent many in the community on such issues as:

  • adequate berthing for our fishing fleet - particularly downtown - and other Ports & Harbors concerns
  • construction of a new library
  • a balance between tourism and citizenry in the summertime
  • financing and other support for new business ventures
  • providing safer streets & sidewalks for pedestrians
  • senior access to programs of interest
  • IMPROVED AUDIO-VISUAL COVERAGE OF CITY COUNCIL MEETINGS so that people who cannot physically attend can SEE the council members and HEAR what people are saying.

I am a careful listener, a creative thinker and judicious in my decisions. I do believe
in compromise when evidence requires it.

I have friends in all walks of life, with a variety of concerns. I understand and sympathize with those who want to stay in Ketchikan but are being driven out by the lack of living-wage employment. I am in favor of mentoring programs and apprenticeship programs designed to put more people to work in meaningful jobs. There will be positions open with the expansion of the Shipyard, the construction of the new Arts Center and Aquarium and other projects which will require skilled labor, design and maintainance of infrastructure, and support businesses. We need people from Ketchikan to fill these positions - not people from outside who will be here only until the project is completed, and have no personal
investment in our community.

I believe that a new set of ideas on City Council will be worthwhile. Ketchikan has so much natural beauty, and so many wonderful and wide-reaching public programs that need our support.

Please give a few minutes to make YOUR wishes and priorities known by voting on October
first.

I will appreciate your support!

Phoebe Newman
