Colleen E. Scanlon

Name: Colleen E. Scanlon

Candidate For: Borough Assembly

Address: P.O. Box 5916 - Ketchikan, Alaska

Background:

I am a 4th generation Alaskan, and a Kayhi graduate. I have worked for the Borough, non-profit organizations, and for the past 11 years for my family business. I have served on the Board of Directors for the Chamber the past 6 years, and an Officer 2 of those years. All my family lives here in Ketchikan, and they are the most important thing to me.

List any experience that qualifies you for this elected position:

Board of Directors Ketchikan Chamber
Board of Directors Visitors Bureau

State 3 reasons why you are seeking a seat on this elected body:

  • I care about the Community and think I can bring a new viewpoint to the table.
  • I think there is a lot of work to be done to make our town economically viable again and I am willing to give my time.
  • I want a future for my 5 1/2 year old niece and other children, and I think I can make a difference.

Why should voters elect you?

I am honest, and straight forward. I am a forward thinker and will try to make change that will bring Ketchikan into the future and the next 50 years.

General Questions:

How do you determine your position on an issue?

I get as many facts available and weigh the pro's and con's.

What would compel you to change your position?

Factual information that had not been brought forward before.

If a dozen people speak at a public meeting on a controversial agenda item with the majority of the speakers opposed and the minority for, how would this impact your ability to form a decision on what is best for the community?

If different information were brought forward that is factual - not farce then I could be swayed to change my vote only if it is in the best interest of the community and not in the best interest of a handful of local people.

Where would you most likely obtain more information on agenda items?

Staff recommendations, newspaper articles, letters to the editor, and the internet.

Who would you most likely talk to prior to making a decision that affects the entire community?

Family, people at work, civic organizations, private friends, government staff and people in the community.

How would you deal with people whose views oppose your beliefs who want to talk to you about an agenda item or issue?

I would listen and agree to disagree.

In a public meeting discussion, what would you likely do?

Tell others my position, listen to the positions of others, and try to reach a compromise.

How do others view you?

Outspoken and reasonable.
