Requires Boarding Passes at the Security Checkpoint at 259 Airports
- The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) on Wednesday
announced that 259 airports - including the Ketchikan International
Airport - are currently participating in TSA's "Selectee
Checkpoint" program. According to information provided by
the TSA this program enhances security and convenience by transferring
the screening of selectees from aircraft boarding gates to security
checkpoints where screening equipment and personnel are concentrated.-

Offset Security Costs - The Transportation Security
Administration (TSA) sent out letters to 66 U.S. air carriers
on Wednesday informing them that their share of $2.3 billion

Ketchikan: Airport Passes State Inspection - The Ketchikan
International Airport was recently re-inspected by the Alaska
Department of Transportation & Public Facilities (DOT&PF)
and received passing grades regarding all aspects of airport
operations according to information provided by David Allen,
Director of Transportation Services for Ketchikan Gateway Borough.
This re-inspection followed earlier critical comments from the
state that the airport was not being operated as it should have

NOAA's annual 'Status of U.S. Fisheries Report to Congress for
2002' demonstrates the continuing efforts of government and fishermen
alike to improve America's marine fish stocks. The report states
that an additional fish stock was fully rebuilt, four species
were taken off the overfished list in 2002 as they head toward
full recovery, and 70 overfished species continue to recover
under federal rebuilding plans. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration (NOAA) is an agency of the Department of Commerce.

Ketchikan: Airport Announces Pedestrian & Traffic Disruptions
- There will be pedestrian and vehicular traffic and parking
disruptions at Ketchikan International Airport (KIA) beginning
May 14th. According to a news release, the West Taxiway Project
Contractor will be conducting trench work in the driving lane
immediately in front of the terminal and along parking spaces
leading down towards the West Taxiway Project site. This will
have an impact on curbside parking and loading/unloading, pedestrian

- First it was the
Education President. After enacting the No Child Left Behind
Act with much ballyhoo, Mr. Bush asked the congress for only
three billion of the estimated sixteen billion dollars needed
to fund it. Then it was the Education Governor. After promising
in last fall's election campaign to fully fund K-12 education
Governor Murkowski sent a budget to the legislature cutting Learning
Opportunity grants by a third and reducing pupil transportation
twenty percent, cuts which would have cost Ketchikan schools
$435,000. Responding to public concerns, the legislature appears
ready to restore most of those cuts, but unfortunately at the
expense of the university system. Now it is our turn at bat,
down here at the local level where children are educated, taxes

Purchase requested by Alaska's Senators to help move existing

Restrictions on State and Federal Lands - Alaska Division
of Forestry and Tongass National Forest officials today announced
that all campfires, warming fires and other fires on lands managed
by the State of Alaska or the National Forest must be attended

it leave. According to a news release, unusually warm, dry conditions
and human carelessness have led to nearly a dozen wildfires erupting
