Math Professor Joins UAS Ketchikan

The University of Alaska Southeast Ketchikan announced the addition of Victor Zinger to the campus faculty as Assistant Professor of Mathematics.

According to a news release, Professor Zinger will join UAS Ketchikan in August for the fall semester. He and his wife are leaving Togiak, Alaska where he was a secondary mathematics teacher for the Southwest Region School District. He also taught dual-credit math courses for the University of Alaska Fairbanks, Bristol Bay campus.

Professor Zinger, a Russian native, is currently working on his Ph.D. Mathematics in Education from the University of Texas at Austin. He holds a Masters of Science in Mathematics with a minor in Secondary Education from the Russian State Pedagogical University as well as a Masters of Science in Oceanography/Engineering with a minor in Mathematics/Statistics from the Artic Department, Engineering Marine Academy.

Prior to teaching in Togiak, he taught mathematics and was the Chair of the Mathematics Department at the Smithville High School in Smithville, Texas. He was a curriculum specialist and teacher at the Science Academy of Austin in Austin, Texas. He was also an adjunct professor teaching mathematics at Austin Community College and Blinn College in Brenham,
Texas.

Professor Zinger has been a visiting scholar at the Science and Mathematics Education Center of the University of Texas at Austin, where he conducted research in mathematics education, worked on design and implementation of new curricula, conducted workshops and seminars.

He is a member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, National Science Teachers Association, Texas Council of Teachers of Mathematics and Alaska Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Professor Zinger has been a mathematics consultant for the National Evaluation System in Austin, Texas, a program coordinator for the Russian/Texas Linkage Program in Austin, Texas and a program evaluator for the American Astronomical Society, a National Society Foundation Project/Teacher Resource Agent Program at the University of Texas at Austin.

In addition to numerous presentations, Professor Zinger has published two papers and successfully received a grant for the Russian/Texas School Linkage Program.

Professor Zinger will be teaching three mathematic courses and one statistics course in the fall semester for UAS Ketchikan.

The University of Alaska Southeast Ketchikan provides a wide variety of educational courses and programs to Ketchikan and the surrounding communities throughout the year. Many course offerings are available both locally and through distance avenues including web-based, audio conference, teleconference and satellite offerings. Through these offerings, students can achieve certificate, associate, bachelor and master degrees.
