Citing their broad experience and commitment to Alaska fisheries, Gov. Tony Knowles on Friday named three new members to the Board of Fisheries: Oliver Holm of Kodiak, Eric Jordan of Sitka and Andrew Szczesny (pronounced "SEZ-nee") of Soldotna.

"Oliver Holm, Eric Jordan, and Andrew Szczesny each bring to the Board of Fisheries a lengthy experience in different aspects of Alaska's fisheries and an understanding of the importance of this resource to Alaskans," Knowles said. "Each also has a history of working within the process to find solutions to often difficult issues. That combination of experience and commitment will serve Alaskans well."

Oliver Holm was born in Ketchikan and has lived in Kodiak since 1962. He started commercial fishing when he was 14 years old and has fished for salmon, cod, halibut, herring, crab, and other species. Holm served on the Kodiak Fish and Game Advisory Committee for 20 years, including 15 years as chairman. He has also served on the Advisory Panel to the North Pacific Fisheries Management Council and the board of the Kodiak Regional Aquaculture Association. A long time member of the United Fishermen of Alaska, Holm recently served as its vice-president.

Eric Jordan is a life long Alaska commercial, sport, and subsistence fisherman. He has worked as a troller, longliner, seiner, diver, sportfish guide, and marine conservationist. Jordan has been active in fisheries groups and served 8 years on the Advisory Panel to the North Pacific Fisheries Management Council and 15 years on the Sitka Fish and Game Advisory Committee. In recent years Jordan has worked to develop consensus solutions to difficult marine conservation and resource sharing problems.

Andrew Szczesny is a registered guide on the upper Kenai River who owns and operates a small catch and release guide business specializing in fly fishing for rainbow trout and dolly varden. A resident of Alaska for 23 years, Szczesny has participated in fish board meetings for the past 10 years, and has attended all that have been held on the Kenai.

The seven-member Board of Fisheries is responsible for the conservation and development of Alaska's fishery resources. Knowles' appointees fill vacancies left when the Legislature refused to vote on three appointees to the board during its most recent session. The Legislature's inaction had the effect of rejecting their confirmations.
