Ketchikan - Coast Guard members from Station Ketchikan helped police officers apprehend a man avoiding arrest early Wednesday.

The Ketchikan Police Department contacted the Coast Guard at 2:20 a.m. reporting a person who avoided their capture, jumped into the water and swam under a pier.

A Ketchikan-based rescue boat crew arrived on scene at 2:30 a.m., and began searching for 21-year-old Jean Pencille with a spotlight. Meanwhile, a female acquaintance of Pencille's jumped in the water after him. Coast Guard rescue swimmer Michael Bradford entered the water after her and escorted her to shore. Bradford then swam under a pier where he suspected Pencille hid, and further searched for the fleeing suspect.

Avoiding Bradford, Pencille returned to shore where Ketchikan Police Department officers took him into custody.

The news release did not state why Pencille was being arrested by the KPD other than he was avoiding arrest and capture.
