The Coast Guard cutter Naushon's boarding team terminated the voyage of a fishing vessel Monday when it was discovered the master was allegedly under the influence of alcohol.

According to information released by the U.S. Coast Guard, the fishing vessel Janis was in the vicinity of Tree Point on the Dixon Entrance when a Coast Guard boarding team conducted a safety and law enforcement boarding. The boarding team members discovered that the vessel's master, George S. Peterson, age 43 of Ketchikan, was reportedly intoxicated.

Peterson was given field sobriety tests, which he reportedly failed. The Naushon's boarding team tested Peterson's blood alcohol content which revealed that Peterson registered a blood alcohol level of 0.113 exceeding the allowable blood alcohol content for a commercial vessel operator of .04.

The Alaska State Troopers reported that the USCG boarding party placed Peterson in custody and transported him back to the Coast Guard base in Ketchikan.

The Naushon escorted the vessel into Ketchikan with the Janis crewman piloting the vessel and the boarding team on board, according to information provided by the USCG.

Upon arrival, the Alaska State Troopers transported Peterson to the Ketchikan Police Department where he consented to an intoximeter breath test, according to a news release. Following the breath test, Peterson was transported to the Ketchikan Correctional Center where he was incarcerated on a charge of Felony DWI and held without bail.
