The University of Alaska Southeast Ketchikan campus has been awarded $500,000 from the United States Department of Labor to assess and develop a training and education program for Alaska Ship and Dry Dock (ASD) and its employees.

The grant, Alaska Shipyard System for Education and Training (ASSET), is a collaborative effort between UAS Ketchikan, ASD and National Shipbuilding Research Project (NSRP).

The goal of the grant is to create a new training and organizational plan that will assist ASD and other US shipyards in maintaining their skilled workforce and support stable, year-round employment for shipyard workers. The effort will adapt and pilot prototype skill assessments and a model training and certification program for shipyard employees.

During the 18-month project, UAS Ketchikan will assess ASD employees using the NSRP model shipbuilding and repair skill standards; review existing shipyard training programs and materials; select appropriate instructional material and training methods; implement classroom
training followed by structured workplace learning and evaluate the changes in employees, knowledge, skills and abilities. UAS Ketchikan will develop individual and group training plans with the employees of ASD.

The project is a NSRP crosscut initiative and will have national significance. Crosscut is the name given by the National Shipbuilding Research Program (NSRP) to the needs associated with supporting people and organizations in U.S. shipbuilding activities. Crosscut includes education and training, organizational change, human resources, and technology transfer.

UAS Ketchikan will provide ASD with a staff member to work onsite with employees. This staff member will be responsible for assessment, implementation and evaluation of training program.

The University of Alaska Southeast Ketchikan Campus provides a wide variety of educational courses and programs to Ketchikan and the surrounding communities throughout the year. Many course offerings are available via both locally and through distance avenues including web-based, audio conference, teleconference and satellite offerings. Through these offerings, students can achieve certifications, associate, bachelor and master degrees.
