Xaadas Tak'anlang, Haida Descendant Dancers performance: Friday, July 12th (also August 9th and September 13th) at 6 pm in the Clanhouse at Totem Bight State Historical Park. Free admission, the public is welcome. Co-sponsored by Alaska State Parks and the Alaska Natural History Association.

The opening reception for Transitions, new and recent work by Juneau artist Heidi Reifenstein will be on Friday, July 5th, from 5-7pm, at the Mainstay Gallery (716 Totem Way). Tickets are on sale for First City Players' production of The Fish Pirate's Daughter: Ketchikan's original musical melodrama, will be back for its 38th season. Open registration for Blueberry Arts Festival booth spaces: There are spaces available for artists, craftspeople, food vendors, game booths, community organizations, and businesses. Join in this great tradition ­ the 27th annual Blueberry Arts Festival will be Saturday, August 3rd. Going on now at the Arts Council office, 716 Totem Way. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Call 225-2211 for information.

Sign up now for ARTSCool Arts Camp (July 15th ­ August 10th): 4 weeks of visual and performing arts for kids ages 8-16. There's something for everyone this summer: Intensive Animation Workshops for older and returning students, theatre on stage and behind the scenes with Annie Jr, Wearable Art, and more. July 15th through August 10th. Sponsored by the Ketchikan Area Arts & Humanities Council and First City Players. Half-day and full-day programs are available. Classes, workshops, etc:

Summer dance workshops: June classes include Ballet, Floor Barre, Intermediate/Advanced Jazz and three adult classes. Call Ketchikan Theatre Ballet at 225-9311 for more information.

July 13th - 15th. Cedar Bark Gathering for families: New weavers and seasoned artists alike are invited to participate in "Cedar Bark Gathering for Families," offered by the Totem Heritage Center. On July 13 ­ 15, Haida weavers and siblings Gloria and Aaron Burns will teach students how to safely gather cedar bark in the forest and prepare it for use. This three-day class will explore the cultural traditions associated with the gathering process as students are learning in the field and preparing their bark in the classroom. Space is limited in this class, which is open to adults and children age 12 and older. (Parents must register with their children to ensure proper supervision.) The first day of this class will be spent gathering bark in the woods. Cost to participate is $55 for Ketchikan residents, and $65 for students living outside city limits. For youth, the cost is $25 for participants inside city limits, and $35 for those outside Ketchikan. September 18th-22nd. Creating Watercolors that Sparkle: The Ketchikan Watercolor Society presents a 5-day workshop with internationally recognized painting instructor Judi Betts. $375 for KWS members, $425 for non-members. Upcoming auditions, contests, artist opportunities, etc:

Auditions for Noises Off by Michael Frayn will be Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday July 8 - 10 at 7 pm at the Mainstay Gallery (716 Totem Way). "Noises Off" is a farce about a farce. This hilarious play has roles for 5 men and 4 women. Directed by Joann Flora the play performs September 26-28 at the Kayhi Auditiorium. Alaskans for Drug Free Youth MURAL/P0STER CONTEST for students ages 8-18 (deadline: July 26th). THEME: "If you can dream it, you can become it" (Wm. Arthur War). CONTEST PURPOSE: The winning poster(s) will be painted as a mural on the side of the Ketchikan General Hospital building at 126 Washington Street to promote safe and drug free communities. CONTEST RULES: Artwork must adhere to the contest theme. Artwork must be original art designed and produced by students' ages 8-18. Artwork must include the theme name. Artwork must be produced in color on a 22x11 inch poster board. Entries are due to the by 5 pm on July 26,2002. Artwork may be dropped off at:Ketchikan General Hospital, Alaskan for Drug Free Youth, Ketchikan Area Arts & Humanities Council. Entry must be attached to the back of the poster board. Entries will become the property of Ketchikan General Hospital. SUGGESTIONS: Bold contrasting colors work best for our purposes. Keep detail limited - the image must be able to be seen from Tongass Ave. Prizes: Three winners will be chosen to have their work displayed as a part of the community. The winners will also be able to be involved and observe the artists processes during the painting of the mural.

Call for artists: Mural project for Alaskans for Drug Free Youth and Tackle Tobacco Program Mural. The selected artist will work with designs chosen from the Mural Contest (listed above). Call for entries: for the Blueberry Arts Festival Juried Art Show at the Mainstay Gallery (deadline: July 28th). The Ketchikan Area Arts & Humanities Council invites artists to submit works for this annual exhibit. Entry deadline: All pieces must be at the Mainstay Gallery, 716 Totem Way, Ketchikan, AK 99901, by Mon, July 28th, at 5pm. Reception: The Mainstay Gallery will host an opening reception on Friday, August 2nd, from 5-7pm. Artists are encouraged to attend. Criteria: There is no theme. Artwork must not have been previously exhibited in Ketchikan. Open to artists working in all media, maximum of two entries per artist. All two-dimensional entries must be framed and ready to hang. All three-dimensional entries must be ready for display. Entry fees: Free to KAAHC members, $25 for non-KAAHC members. Entries submitted by mail must include payment for return postage in addition to entry fee. Prizes: First: $150 cash & a $100 gift certificate to Tongass Business Center's art supply room; Second: $125 cash & a $75 gift certificate to The Finishing Touch; Third: $100 cash & a $50 gift certificate to Tatsuda's IGA. Call for choreographers and dancers, for the 5th Annual Gigglefeet Dance Festival, which will be August 2nd and 4th at Kayhi Auditorium. Deadline to register: It would be nice to know that you're planning to participate as soon as possible; the final deadline to register your participation and be included in the printed program is Friday, July 13th. Best Blueberry Dish Contest: Entries due Friday, August 2nd, between noon - 2:30 pm at the Mainstay Gallery, 716 Totem Way. Prize: a $100 gift certificate to the Gallery and a Festival t-shirt. Calling musicians and songwriters: The 4rd annual Blueberry Battle of the Bands will take place on the performance stage during the Blueberry Arts Festival on Saturday, August 3rd. It's a festival of Ketchikan's musical talent, and there are judges and prizes. So if you're like so many who've been meaning to get the old or the new band together, start today. The Arts Council, through the underwriting support of Royal Caribbean International, is posting hundreds of dollars in cash prizes in a variety of categories. Auditions for Oklahoma, First City Players' annual fall musical, will be August 26th-28th. Call the Players at 225-4792 for more information.

The Ketchikan Community Concert Band will start rehearsing on a regular basis again in the Fall on Monday nights at McPherson Music's Education Center, although individual sections of the band are rehearsing together this summer as small groups. The Ketchikan Community Concert Band is an Advisory Committee of the Ketchikan Area Arts and Humanities Council. Please call Roy or Tina McPherson at 225-3650 if you are interested in joining.

Meetings and Gatherings:

First City Toastmasters meet Tuesdays at noon at the Youth Court chambers in the Plaza.

The Ketchikan Area Arts and Humanities Council Board of Directors meets the third Tuesday of every month at 6pm at the Mainstay Gallery, 716 Totem Way.

Rainy Day Quilters meet on the fourth Tuesday of the month, at 6:45 pm, at Holy Name.
