Senator Ted Stevens announced Tuesday that Alaska will receive
$1.34 million in port security grants to finance the costs of
enhancing facility and operational security and to address potential
vulnerabilities in our nation's ports and waterways. These grants
are part of a competitive port security program totaling $92.3
million nationwide that was announced yesterday by Transportation
Secretary Norm Mineta.
"These grants will help
pay for increased security at Alaska's most critical ports since
the terrorist attacks of September 11th. Alaska's port security
is a priority and necessity for our State, and is critically
important to our Nation's domestic energy supply," said
Stevens.
The Alaska grants are as follows:
Port of Anchorage:
- $403,833 for procurement and
installation of cameras and motion sensors
- $54,375 for perimeter fencing
Port of Ketchikan:
- $122,721 for physical security
barriers to limit pedestrian and vehicle access
Port of Valdez:
- $764,000 for remote thermal
imaging of tanker shipping lanes
Congress provided funding for
the grant program to the Transportation Security Administration
(TSA), which is responsible for security in all modes of transportation.
TSA, along with the Maritime Administration and the U.S. Coast
Guard, reviewed project applications and is administering the
grant program.
