Summer dance workshops: June classes include Ballet, Floor Barre, Intermediate/Advanced Jazz and three adult classes. Call Ketchikan Theatre Ballet at 225-9311 for more information. Cedar Bark Gathering for families: New weavers and seasoned artists alike are invited to participate in "Cedar Bark Gathering for Families," offered by the Totem Heritage Center. On July 13 - 15, Haida weavers and siblings Gloria and Aaron Burns will teach students how to safely gather cedar bark in the forest and prepare it for use. This three-day class will explore the cultural traditions associated with the gathering process as students are learning in the field and preparing their bark in the classroom. Space is limited in this class, which is open to adults and children age 12 and older. (Parents must register with their children to ensure proper supervision.) The first day of this class will be spent gathering bark in the woods. Cost to participate is $55 for Ketchikan residents, and $65 for students living outside city limits. For youth, the cost is $25 for participants inside city limits, and $35 for those outside Ketchikan. Creating Watercolors that Sparkle: The Ketchikan Watercolor Society presents a 5-day workshop with internationally recognized painting instructor Judi Betts, on September 18th-22nd, 2002 (Wed, Thurs and Sat: 9am-4:30pm; Fri and Sun: 1-8:30pm). $375 for KWS members, $425 for non-members. The Ketchikan Area Arts & Humanities Council invites artists to submit works for this annual exhibit. Entry deadline: All pieces must be at the Mainstay Gallery, 716 Totem Way, Ketchikan, AK 99901, by Mon, July 28th, at 5pm. Reception: The Mainstay Gallery will host an opening reception on Friday, August 2nd, from 5-7pm. Artists are encouraged to attend. Criteria: There is no theme. Artwork must not have been previously exhibited in Ketchikan. Open to artists working in all media, maximum of two entries per artist. All two-dimensional entries must be framed and ready to hang. All three-dimensional entries must be ready for display. Entry fees: Free to KAAHC members, $25 for non-KAAHC members. Entries submitted by mail must include payment for return postage in addition to entry fee.
