Traditionally, a weaver could not claim total ownership of a basket unless they personally gathered the materials used in its making. The quality of these materials is also an essential factor in determining the value of a basket. This three-day class will explore the cultural traditions associated with the gathering process as students are learning in the field and preparing their bark in the classroom. Space is limited in this class, which is open to adults and children age 12 and older. (Parents must register with their children to ensure proper supervision.) The first day of this class will be spent gathering bark in the woods. Students wishing to participate in the gathering must be physically able to negotiate rough terrain on foot. Cost to participate is $55 for Ketchikan residents, and $65 for students living outside city limits. For youth, the cost is $25 for participants inside city limits, and $35 for those outside Ketchikan. For more information, or to register for "Cedar Bark Gathering for Families," call 225-5900 or stop by the Totem Heritage Center at 601 Deermount Street.
