Juneau, AK - Due to the threat of terrorist activities nationwide, Alaskans are reminded to stay alert and be watchful for and report any suspicious activities that may occur in our ports and waterways.

One of the best methods that law enforcement agencies can learn of potential terrorists activities in Alaska is through the eyes and ears of the people in the local communities that they serve. Anyone observing any suspicious activities in Alaska ports, communities or waterways, is please urged to report them to law enforcement officials and the 17th Coast Guard District command center at (907) 463-2000 or toll free at 1-800-478-5555.

Alaskans' assistance is also needed to help maintain the safety and security of vessels and port areas. Pedestrians should stay clear of all access points to cruise and passenger ships, including associated restricted areas. All commercial and recreational vessel operators and canoeists, divers, swimmers, etc. should stay at least 50 yards away from cruise and passenger ships unless entering or departing a port facility that necessitates a closer approach.

Alaskans play an important role in the Coast Guard's ability to identify potential terrorist activities. The Coast Guard appreciates cooperation in assuring the security of Alaska's ports, waterways and vessels.
