One weekend only!!! First City Players' production of We Won't Pay! We Won't Pay! will run June 13th-15th at 8pm, at Kayhi Auditorium, with a "pay-what-you-can" performance on Wednesday, June 12th at 7:30pm. With the price of groceries rising every day, what's a poor girl to do? Stuff bags of food up her sweater and pretend to be pregnant, of course! Laughs are on special when 1997 Nobel Prize winner Dario Fo opens the can on shoplifting. We Won't Pay! We Won't Pay! is a sidesplitting satire that'll have you rolling in the (grocery) aisles. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for students and seniors. Discounts on advance ticket purchases: $48 for a Friends Pak (4 adult tickets); $40 for a Family Pak (2 adults, 2 students or seniors). Registration is going on now for ARTSCool Arts Camp: 4 weeks of visual and performing arts for kids ages 8-16. There's something for everyone this summer: Intensive Animation Workshops for older and returning students, theatre on stage and behind the scenes with Annie Jr, Wearable Art, and more. July 15th through August 10th. Sponsored by the Ketchikan Area Arts & Humanities Council and First City Players. Half-day and full-day programs are available. Ongoing exhibits:

Paper Trails and Paintings from Provence, a dual show of handmade paper creations and plein air paintings by Ketchikan artist MJ Turek, is on display at the Mainstay Gallery, 716 Totem Way. Notable Folks: A History of Ketchikan is on display at the Tongass Historical Museum, 629 Dock Street, through September 29th. Information at 225-5600.

Art Camps and summer programs for kids:

Registration is going on now for ARTSCool Arts Camp: (see "This Week" listing above).

Children's SeaAlaska Culture Week: Are you looking for a safe, educational and FUN activity for your kids? The Totem Heritage Center is currently registering kids ages 7 - 14 for this year's Southeast Alaska Children's Culture Week, June 17 - 21. Several well-respected educators will lead games, crafts and a field trip. Debbie McLavey, president of the Haida Descendant Cultural Dance Group, will teach youth traditional Haida songs and dances. Tsimshian bead artist Bernice Davis will assist kids in making their own miniature octopus bags. Tlingit instructors Esther Shea and Linda Blankenship will point out what foods can be harvested from our very own seashore at Rotary Beach. The week will end with a celebratory potluck, when children will dance for their parents. Each day of Culture Week begins at 1pm and ends at 4pm. Cost is $50 for Ketchikan residents, and $55 for children outside city limits. Space is limited, so call 225-5900 immediately to ensure your child's participation! Classes, workshops, etc:

Cedar Bark Gathering: Instructor to be announced. Date of class depends on when the bark is ready to be harvested (sometime in June). Call the Totem Heritage Center at 225-5900 for more information.

Summer dance workshops: June classes include Ballet, Floor Barre, Intermediate/Advanced Jazz and three adult classes. Call Ketchikan Theatre Ballet at 225-9311 for more information.

Crosstraining Writing and Performance Project: June 26th-July 5th. An intensive 10-day interdisciplinary training program involving coursework in fiction, poetry, choreography, design, playwriting, acting, and directing. Sponsored by Perseverance Theatre in Juneau. Creating a Geography of Hope: the 19th Annual Sitka Symposium. June 16th-23rd. The Sitka Symposium is a gathering that aims to put written and oral traditions to the service of ideas. It caters to a broad audience of writers, readers, and anyone interested in the theme. Activities include talks by leaders, panel and group discussions, and readings. Creating Watercolors that Sparkle: The Ketchikan Watercolor Society presents a 5-day workshop with internationally recognized painting instructor Judi Betts, on September 18th-22nd, 2002 (Wed, Thurs and Sat: 9am-4:30pm; Fri and Sun: 1-8:30pm). $375 for KWS members, $425 for non-members. Upcoming auditions, contests, artist opportunities, etc:

Call for entries: for the Blueberry Arts Festival Juried Art Show at the Mainstay Gallery. The Ketchikan Area Arts & Humanities Council invites artists to submit works for this annual exhibit. Entry deadline: All pieces must be at the Mainstay Gallery, 716 Totem Way, Ketchikan, AK 99901, by Mon, July 28th, at 5pm. Reception: The Mainstay Gallery will host an opening reception on Friday, August 2nd, from 5-7pm. Artists are encouraged to attend. Criteria: There is no theme. Artwork must not have been previously exhibited in Ketchikan. Open to artists working in all media, maximum of two entries per artist. All two-dimensional entries must be framed and ready to hang. All three-dimensional entries must be ready for display. Entry fees: Free to KAAHC members, $25 for non-KAAHC members. Entries submitted by mail must include payment for return postage in addition to entry fee. Prizes: First: $150 cash & a $100 gift certificate to Tongass Business Center's art supply room; Second: $125 cash & a $75 gift certificate to The Finishing Touch; Third: $100 cash & a $50 gift certificate to Tatsuda's IGA. Call for choreographers and dancers, for the 5th Annual Gigglefeet Dance Festival, which will be August 2nd and 4th at Kayhi Auditorium. Auditions for The Fish Pirate's Daughter will be held on June 10th & 11th at 5pm at the Mainstay Gallery, 716 Totem Way. Directed by Elizabeth Nelson. Meetings and Gatherings:

First City Toastmasters meet Tuesdays at noon at the Youth Court chambers in the Plaza.

The Ketchikan Area Arts and Humanities Council Board of Directors meets the third Tuesday of every month at 6pm at the Mainstay Gallery, 716 Totem Way.

Rainy Day Quilters meet on the fourth Tuesday of the month, at 6:45pm, at Holy Name.

Lionheart: The Jesse Martin Story. Film on widescreen at the Ketchikan Public Library, Tuesday, June 18th, at 7pm. The story of the youngest person ever to sail solo, unassisted, and non-stop around the world.
