Tickets are on sale now: for the February 13th performance by Ailey II dance company from New York City. This highly-trained dance company merges the spirit and energy of the country's best young talent with the passion and creative vision of today's most outstanding emerging choreographers. Tickets are $25 for adults, $20 for students and seniors, $75 for a Family-Pack (2 adults, 2 students/seniors), and $85 for a Friends-Pack (4 adults), available at Soho Coho, McPherson Music, Mirror Images, the Arts Council, and Ketchikan Theatre Ballet. Opening reception for "We Photograph Anything, Anywhere", The Fisher Studio Collection, will take place on Friday, February 8, 5 ­ 7pm, at the Tongass Historical Museum, 629 Dock Street. "We photograph anything, anywhere" is an exhibition of photographs taken in the 1920s and 30s by Elliot Fisher. This exhibition of about 70 photographs will feature a wide variety of photographic styles and techniques, demonstrating the versatility and ingenuity of this local photographer who indeed seemed to photograph everything, everywhere. Also on exhibit will be a selection of newly discovered, century-old glass plate images by Benjamin Haldane, a Metlakatla photographer, whose work spans from 1890 ­ 1930. In addition the Museum's usual fare of fine culinary arts, the opening reception will feature Sheila Kleinschmidt (flute) and Sarah Corporon (keyboard) performing a wonderful selection of classical music. Celebrate Mardi Gras and Valentines at the same time at KRBD's ValenGras MardiTine Dance on Saturday, February 9th, at 8pm, at the Edge in Salmon Landing. All proceeds help to support community radio in Southern Southeast Alaska. 225-9655 for info.

Quilting workshops at the Silver Thimble: Winter workshops include Beginning Machine Quilting, Beginning Needle Turn Appliqué, Quilting 101, and Country Hearts. Upcoming auditions, contests, artist opportunities, etc:

Main Street Gallery's Call for artists and curators for the 2002-3 Gallery Season. Please contact the Ketchikan Area Arts & Humanities Council at 225-2211, or 338 Main Street, Ketchikan, Alaska, 99901 to request a prospectus. Deadline for proposals: Friday, February 22nd.

Blueberry Arts Festival t-shirt design contest: $500 prize. The design must incorporate the words "Blueberry Arts Festival 2002, Ketchikan, Alaska". You may submit a camera-ready design, or a sketch of your design accompanied by samples of your completed work. (Slides or photos are acceptable. If you submit a sketch, you must be willing to complete the design by April 20th. Deliver or mail your entry to the Ketchikan Area Arts & Humanities Council, 338 Main Street, Ketchikan, AK, 99901. If you would like your entry returned, please enclose a SASE with sufficient postage. Winner will be contacted, and announced in the May newsletter. Deadline: April 1st, 2002.
Meetings and Gatherings:

Parlons Chez Nous. This new group, formed for people who enjoy speaking French, will meet from 7-8:30pm on Wednesday evenings at MJ's Place B & B. Information at 225-4686 or 225-7486.

The Ketchikan Watercolor Society will meet on Saturday, February 2nd, from 2-4pm at the First Lutheran Church Annex. New members welcome.

First City Toastmasters meet Tuesdays at noon at their new home in the Youth Court chambers in the Plaza.

The Ketchikan Area Arts and Humanities Council Board of Directors meets the third Tuesday of every month at 6pm at the Main St. Gallery. The meeting is open to the public.

Rainy Day Quilters meet on the fourth Tuesday of the month, at 6:45pm, at Holy Name.
The Annual Meeting of the Ketchikan Area Arts & Humanities Council will be Friday, January 18th, 2002.

Festival of the North, Ketchikan's month-long celebration of the arts (Feb):

Ray Troll's Sharkabet slide show and book launch/signing will take place on Friday, February 15th, at 6pm, at Parnassus Bookstore, upstairs in the Star building at #5 Creek Street. Sharkabet: a Sea of Sharks from A to Z is the latest children's book from Ketchikan artist Ray Troll. Ray will give a slide show on the art from the book and the fascinating world of living and prehistoric sharks. While geared to children, the book should appeal to anyone with an interest in these ancient denizens of the deep. This is the "o-fish-al" start of a national tour for Ray. The Monthly Grind will be on Saturday, February 16th, at 7pm, at Saxman Tribal House. Featuring the talents of local musicians, storytellers, poets and/or dancers. A family tradition. Quilting in the Rain XI: Rainy Day Quilters' Annual Quilt Show & Quilt Auction. February 16th & 17th, 2002, at Plaza Port West. The Rainy Day Quilters present their annual exhibit of hand-crafted quilts. Beautiful quilts created by local artisans, antique quilts, and a special quilt raffle and sale are featured in this exhibition. Sponsors: Rainy Day Quilters. Ketchikan Theatre Ballet will present An Evening of Dance at Kayhi on Feb 23rd. This performance will feature an array ballet, tap, jazz and modern performed by our Jr. and Sr. Company members. This year's performance will feature a contemporary jazz piece choreographed by Neda Ebrahimi for our Senior Company. Call Ketchikan Theatre Ballet 907-225-9311 for more information.

The Ketchikan Community Chorus presents Voices of the North, on February 24th at 2pm, at Holy Name Church. Tickets are $5 for adults, $1 for kids. This concert will feature some of Ketchikan's finest musicians performing classical and other works. From Brahms to Barber, by small ensembles and soloists, this evening of great music will assuage your musical appetite. Save a space on your busy calendar for this entertaining evening of music. Trio Voronezh, a classically-trained Russian trio with a diverse repertoire of music played with gypsy influences, will perform in Ketchikan on March 16th. This concert is part of the Torch Nights Performing Arts Series, sponsored by the Arts Council. Info at 225-2211.

The Assad Brothers, virtuoso classical guitarists from Brazil, will perform in Ketchikan on April 30th. This concert is part of the Torch Nights Performing Arts Series, sponsored by the Arts Council. Info at 225-2211.

Ketchikan Theatre Ballet will present their Spring Gala performance at Kayhi on May 10th and 11th, 2002.
First City Players' production of Proof, by David Auburn, will be performed on the following dates: June 7, 8, 14, 15, 21, & 22, 2002, Main Street Theatre This winner of the 2001 Pulitzer Prize and the 2001 Tony Award for Best Play is one of the most acclaimed plays of the recent seasons.

The opening reception for an exhibit by Ketchikan artist MJ Turek, will be on Friday, June 7th, from 5-7pm, at the Main Street Gallery (338 Main Street). The reception is free and open to the public.
